What is Vector Art?

Vector Images: A vector image is a computer image that uses a Wire Frame or Outlinesto define a shapes’ area. This is made up of mathematical descriptions of paths and fills to define the graphic. A vector image is drawn in shapes and lines called paths. The image can be enlarged to any size without losing quality. Applications that can create vector images are Adobe Illustrator, Corel Draw, Adobe Framemaker to name a few.

Bitmap and Raster Images: The words Bitmap and Raster both refer to images made up of dots or squares of color. When a bitmap or raster image is enlarged the dots or squares that make up the image are also enlarged and can become visible. The result is a jagged or blurry image as shown. Therefore, the more dots you have per square inch (ie 600 dpi), the better the quality. You cannot take a photograph with an original setting of 72 dpi and change it to 600 dpi. You must take the photo with the setting of 600 dpi in order to maintain the resolution.

Squares or dots become visible when enlarging a photo.
